What You Need to Know
Description:
Our closed loop geothermal heat pump system uses two 365' geothermal wells, ClimateMaster tranquility 27 heat pump, Flow Center Products BNRF136 Earth Loop Pump, and ClimateMaster ATP32U03 Thermostat
Other Benefits:
This system qualified for the PSNH HeatSmart electric rate, which is typically about a 25-33% discount versus the regular residential rate. Currently, the savings is 33%.
Maintenance Requirements:
January 2012 Bill Wenzel Heating & Air Conditioning expertly diagnosed & efficiently replaced a bad air coil(warranty item) & resultant low refrigerant as well as made some airflow improvements in the CoreFocused Pilates Studio.
Efficiency or Sustainability Improvements:
We had our house blower-door tested and it was found to be perfectly balanced at a 0.38 air changes per hour rate, so no further insulating or draft mitigation was necessary.
My Motivation:
We wanted to hedge the rising cost of fossil fuels (we previously heated with propane) and also wanted to update our central A/C system, which was a 1987 vintage 8 SEER system from Lennox, good for its day, but no comparison to the efficiencies of the ClimateMaster system we installed. Also, depending on the price of propane, I felt we could save between $1,800 and $2,300/year.
Advice:
If you are in a well insulated house with an aging heating and cooling system (preferably forced hot air), and may need to replace the system in the next few years, I would strongly urge you to look into geothermal systems like ours. My only regret is that I didn't install the de-super-heater to give us 'free' hot water from our 'Geo' system.
Experience with Installer:
The original installers were very good, however, a year after installing our system, they stopped doing business in the Geothermal arena. The folks at Bill Wenzel Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., have been very helpful and expert in maintaining the system since they took over from the original installers.
Open House Info:
