Solar Side Up

With a recent purchase of an EV, rising utilities costs, and a large federal subsidy on the table, my wife and I decided to get solar power for our house. After some negative experiences with door-to-door solar salespeople, we did some research and found EnergySage, who promptly got us in contact with multiple local solar power companies. After talking with each, we found Solar Side Up to be the best cost per quality and our sales rep Brian to be truly exceptional. He was able to answer all of our questions about the panels themselves, the installation process, general details about solar companies, all without being pushy like many of the other reps we talked to. The installation took a little longer to get started due to weather, but once the crew got to our home it took less than a day for them to get everything installed and our system was cleared by our energy company just a few weeks later (this is the typical procedure). We are very grateful to EnergySage and Solar Side Up (especially Brian and Kirsten) for making the process of adding solar power to our home straightforward and efficient.

I am very pleased with Solar Side Up. The office always quickly responded to any questions. The scheduling was handled well and was aligned with our personal plans. The whole process, including the permitting and approval from the city of Loveland was very smooth. The company handled all of the paperwork and, as homeowner, there was almost no work. The company created an excellent set of documentation and left the homeowner with a complete set of drawings The crew that did the installation worked hard, was very knowledgeable, and exceeded expectations. Overall, I highly recommend Solar Side up.

The Jist: You can expect great responsiveness during the sales and install process, but don’t hold your breath if you expect the system to live up to their output promises. We are two years plus into ownership of a Solar Side Up system, and while things started out great, they have deteriorated greatly in regards to the discrepancy between system output promises (which was supposedly adjusted to reflect an industry standard 10% variance) and what we are actually getting. Perhaps worse, they are happy to offer a discounted rate to charge us to fix their design flaw. In short, we were told we could expect a 1.9 Megawatt output a year on a perfectly south facing roof with 15 panels and only a 2 foot tip of an evergreen tree to create a shadow during 2 hours or so of the day. The system is UNDERPERFORMING by 1.6 Megawatts over a year, roughly 18% under projections with near ideal conditions for a solar setup. When brought to their attention, Solar Side Up identified only 1 underperforming panel (the one with the 2 foot tree tip obstruction) which was underperforming by a whopping 100 kilowatts (0.1 Megawatts) a year. Solar Side Up said they were happy to move the one panel slightly at a discounted rate and then gave an estimate of what it would take to actually make the system produce their original specifications. You can count on Solar Side Up to: 1) Overpromise 2) Underdeliver 3) Charge to fix their shortcomings

Solar side up came out and installed in three days. A couple weeks later we were up and running. Very good communication. Great price. 10/10 Would solar again.
